But there are also some deeper twists in there-for example, the real reason why Patrick gave up on acting and became reclusive is utterly heartbreaking, and its touching to see the way he helps Maisie and Grant grieve for their mother, ultimately helps him as well. In some ways, the story reminded me a lot of Uncle Buck, one of my favourite movies from my childhood. Is he up to the task of looking after two kids who are grieving for their mother, and whose father is in rehab? There's only one way to find out. Patrick loves the kids, but up until now, time spent with them has always been in small doses. When a tragic turn of events occurs, Parick, or Gay Uncle Patrick as he is sometimes known, is tasked with looking after his niece Maisie, and his nephew Grant for a while. The rest of his family live on the other side of the country. ![]() Patrick is a former sitcom star living a quiet but luxurious life in Palm Springs. Steven Rowley is back with The Guncle a novel that is funny, touching and has a whole lot of heart. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Shange’s Mood Indigo poem, dedicated to Duke, the first part of a trilogy: This is really a book celebrating African American men-she grew up in “the company of men”-such as Paul Robeson, Dizzy Gillespie, Honey Bear Akins, The Clovers. But this is in part a memoir for Shange-I was there!-during what was (perhaps) a harder time to be black in America than now, and what could be forged in that isolation, often powerful, such as the music of Ellington.Īs she says, “DuBois walked up my father’s stairs” (!! Imagine that!) Trust me, I live in segregated Chicago, near segregated Milwaukee, and whatever work to de-segregate schools and housing has largely been undone. A picture book by the poet Ntozake Shange, beautifully illustrated by Kadir Nelson in part about Duke Ellington, but more broadly about a time in which segregation was more rigidly enforced by skin color. ![]() ![]() Houses In Africa, David Ling Publishers (New Zealand), 1995 (as Alma A.In 2009, she donated her archive to the department of Rare Books and Special Collections at Northern Illinois University. I have read fantasies much, much worse than this. And I was pleased, after plowing through some tedious and prolix opening chapters, to find myself settling into a story that was, as my British friends might say, a bit of all right. But he hasn't produced a stinkburger either. In The Great Hunt, Robert Jordan hasn't given fantasy any sort of masterpiece his prose is still often atrociously overwritten, needlessly bloating many passages that should have been conveyed more succinctly. ![]() The fact is that when any artist provokes sharply polarized opinions love him or hate him the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Since Jordan is such a powderkeg of controversy in fantasy, with readers falling four-square to either one side or the other of the quality question with little grey area inbetween, I figured I ought to forge ahead with the series and see where I stand in the debate. I admit it's taken me a while to get up the gumption to continue with Robert Jordan's massive (and seemingly endless) Wheel of Time saga. ![]() ![]() This Is Going to Hurt, his diary of life as a junior doctor, was voted for by.
